PADDY HAYNES
England's Strongest Man
Everyone has a story about how they got into strongman, but I want to know why you stuck around. What about strongman pulled you in and kept you here?
Genuinely, I think it's the easiest sport for chasing self-improvement. Obviously I shot sort of fairly high fairly quick, so for me it's been pretty easy to stick around, to be fair bro haha, because it's just going from strength to strength, and the most mad opportunities keep coming. So I wanna do this sport for at least 10 years and achieve basically everything I can and everything there is to achieve.
"I think genetically I am built to do it very much. I've got huge hands, I've got a long wingspan, the long distance running background has helped massively with my endurance, but growing up on a farm definitely helped that as well."
What inspires you?
Literally just continually getting better. Legends like Terry Hollands and Loz inspire me as well, but trying to provide a life for me and Dais through getting to do my favourite hobby is just the best thing ever.
What is it about you that makes you good at strongman? Did something in you develop, or were you born with it?
I like to think I'm fitter than most of the guys I compete against, and I'm also on the slightly more intelligent end — as arrogant as that sounds — but learning where to pick points up, training strategically, and not just going for a max log and a max deadlift.
And genetically I am built to do it very much. I've got huge hands, I've got a long wingspan, the long distance running background has helped massively with my endurance. I don't build up lactic acid like a lot of people, but growing up on a farm definitely helped that as well.
Why do you want to be on this team?
It's the best team to be on. It's cool. It's a gap that wasn't filled in strongman and I just really like the products, and the owner is sometimes ok hahaha.
How does Odd Objects improve the sport of strongman?
Well it's helping me through this crazy life trying to get to the top. I don't think there is another company doing product design collabs with smaller athletes, and that is huge. Building a community and supporting athletes that probably wouldn't have gotten that support beforehand, being a breath of fresh air in the industry. And by producing clothes that aren't red and black with a bear on it!
What's your favorite Odd Objects product?
